It’s hard to see our parents grow old, it’s hard to see them get sick or struggle and it’s even harder to watch as your president throws your ailing father under the bus in an attempt to boost his own ego.
During a rally in Duluth, Minnesota Wednesday evening, Trump attacked John McCain for the 2017 collapse of a Republican effort to pull back the Affordable Care Act.
“We had a gentleman way into the morning hours, go thumbs-down,” Trump said, according to a CNN report. “He went thumbs-down.”
The president gestured to the crowd, carefully avoiding any direct mention of McCain’s name. McCain heroically cast a vote last year that prevented the repeal of Obamacare by gesturing with a thumbs-down on the Senate floor. McCain had returned to Washington for the vote after receiving his brain cancer diagnosis.
At Trump’s Wednesday rally, a woman in the crowd cried out, “He’s a war hero,” after Trump’s disparaging comments, according to CNN. Trump brushed her aside and quickly moved on to another topic.
Meghan McCain, the senator’s daughter, fired back on Twitter responding to the moment first reported by New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, who pointed out that the president had references about McCain, “who is dying,” at rallies before.
“And it never stops being gross,” Meghan McCain said on Twitter.

Meghan McCain, and the senator’s wife, Cindy, have been vocal defenders of the senator on Twitter throughout his struggle with a deadly form of brain cancer. McCain, who has been resting in Arizona since late December, also continues to share his own opinions on Twitter, recently lashing out against the family separations taking place with undocumented migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border.
